With all of the sites and forums out there, it was getting way too difficult to keep up to date on all of them. This season, I will get all of my fishing reports and tidbits (at least weekly) here first and then copied to the other forums. So sign up here and be the first to know what is going on out there!

Over this past weekend I was able to find some nice pods of Bonito along the RI shoreline. There have been reports over the past few weeks but no real solid numbers. Fly fisherman may have an advantage as the bait is really small as you can see from the picture above. That is only about 2 inches! Small lures may also produce but the wind may impact casting.
Block Island has slowed a little over the past week as Newport gets better each day. No more 2:30 am departures for me!

Fluke, Sea Bass, Blackfish, Bluefish, Tuna, Scup and soon to be steady Albacore are making their mark. Sea Bass have been plentiful and big this year and are fantastic table fare! Fluke fishing has been consistent and Albies just started to make an appearance. Not long before they stay put for a couple of weeks and make it worth a trip. The tuna has been sporadic at best and as the bait gets settled, they will settle as well. The picture above was from Ed Gotovich going solo on a nice Tuna that was successfully released. Block Island has been producing steady 30+ pound bass as well as some of the biggest blues of the season. Pre Dawn is the key and I know the door it opens! Get your rest... you will need it!
Tight lines,
Capt. Patterson

I do apologize for the long overdue report! Let’s get down to what has been going on. There have been HUGE bass off of Block Island over the past several weeks. The one seen above here was a beautiful 31 pounder by a Block Island Rookie - Sarah. Tuna have been sporadic in the same area but the nice part is that it has been a late morning or early afternoon bite. Cape Cod has slowed down a bit for Tuna but that does not mean they are not there. They are large and in charge! Inshore black sea bass and fluke has been getting better each day and the first signs of Bonito have shown earlier this week. Things are hot in a lot of different areas so get out there and fish!

Well to say that these fish test gear is an understatement! This week we have seen everything from hooks being thrown, leader pulls and even a brand new Z-Bass reel explode on the Blue Fin Tuna. We were able to tag a nice 68” fish with Ed Gotovich on board “The Dog House”. Eugene Berger and his buddy Andy got a chance to mingle with a beast for over an hour, working with a reel that had its gears ripped apart by the first blistering run. Needless to say, that one is going back and Fin Deep will only be using Van Staal 275s from here on out! The rules have changed and the tuna are the chairmen. If you are feeling lucky, call now as there are a couple of openings left in August - November!

Striped bass have been the target lately with many fish in the 35+ inch range. That is going to change quickly as the Bunker are storming the upper bay. If you can’t get live bunker, chunks have worked as well as clams and eels. Give me a call and I’ll do my best to get your lines tight on RI’s famous bass! They are getting bigger each day!
